Transfers and Taxis at Cancun International Airport

Cancun International Airport serves as the primary point of entry for all domestic and international flights, in other words, it’s the airport where millions of travelers arrive each year, eager to enjoy the paradisiacal beaches of the Mexican Caribbean.

As such, the airport is located approximately 20 minutes from downtown Cancun (both Cancun’s city center and the Hotel Zone). However, not all visitors to the Riviera Maya stay in Cancun’s hotels. They might choose to stay in Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen, Costa Mujeres, Playa Mujeres, Puerto Aventuras, Akumal, Tulum, and so on.

Therefore, it’s important for you to be aware of your options or alternatives for transfers, shuttles, transfers, and taxis from the airport to your hotel.

Private Transfers and Taxis

The private transfer service is, by far, the best way to get from Cancun Airport to your hotel… No matter where in Cancun or the Riviera Maya you are! As its name implies, it’s a 100% private service and can be provided in a small taxi-like vehicle, a luxury van, a Cadillac, a limousine, and even a bus.

In a few words, it’s a service where you can choose the type of vehicle you want to be your mode of transportation. Additionally, you can personalize it with baby seats, drinks, food, and even stops at specific places during your journey to your hotel.

However, it’s worth mentioning that depending on the city or region where you are, there may be one or more vehicle options. For example: You can choose a limousine transfer from Cancun Airport to any hotel in Cancun, but not from the airport to Playa del Carmen.

Regarding costs, it always depends on the type of vehicle, area, and the number of passengers traveling with you. However, the current transfer prices are as follows.

Do you want to book your transfer or private taxi right now? You can do so from here.

Taxis

Another service you can find within Cancun Airport to get to your hotel in Cancun city, Costa Mujeres, Playa Mujeres, the Isla Mujeres ferry, Puerto Morelos, and Playa del Carmen (other more distant places, really not possible), is the taxi service from the airport.

But, what’s the difference between private service and airport taxi service? The main difference is that private taxi service can be reserved online and would be waiting for you upon your arrival at Cancun Airport.

On the other hand, conventional taxi services are taken directly from the airport without the need for reservations. However, it’s important to mention that you have to wait in line to board. Additionally, this type of service usually doesn’t adhere to the standardized tariff, as “payment is made at the end of your transfer.”

Therefore, you might be charged a bit more than what it actually is. Nevertheless, it remains an available option to leave Cancun Airport.

ADO Bus

ADO is a low-cost bus and shared van service. A service that could be called “public transportation” despite not being exactly that. This service is available from Cancun Airport and can take you, as such, to the center of Cancun, near the entrance of Puerto Morelos, to the center of Playa del Carmen, near the entrance of Puerto Aventuras, Akumal, the center of Tulum, and several other places.

However, it’s necessary to emphasize that as such, this shared and public transport service is destined for the center of a city or its entrance. Therefore, it won’t drop you off at the doorstep of your hotel. What does this mean? If your hotel is a bit far from the center or entrance, you’ll need to take another form of transportation to reach it.

Cancun Airport Terminals

Cancun International Airport has multiple terminals that operate to serve passengers arriving at and departing from this popular tourist city in Mexico. Below, I provide you with information about the airport terminals:

Terminal 1

Terminal 1 is the smallest of Cancun International Airport’s terminals. Although it is more modest in size, it remains an important hub for both domestic and international flights. This terminal primarily caters to low-cost airlines and charter flights. While it may not offer the same amenities and modernity as the newer terminals, it remains a convenient choice for passengers seeking budget flights and efficient connections.

Terminal 2

Terminal 2 is one of the oldest terminals at the airport and has undergone several expansions and improvements over the years. Here, both domestic and international flights are mainly handled, offering a wide variety of airline options. This terminal is an excellent choice for both local travelers and those arriving from other countries.

Terminal 3

Terminal 3 is the largest and most modern at Cancun International Airport. Inaugurated in 2007, this terminal has become a significant hub for international flights. Numerous international airlines operate here, connecting Cancun to destinations around the world. Passengers seeking comfort and high-quality services will find a top-notch travel experience at Terminal 3.

Terminal 4

Terminal 4 is the most recent addition to the airport, inaugurated in 2017 to address the growing number of passengers arriving in Cancun. Similar to Terminal 3, Terminal 4 is dedicated to international flights and offers modern infrastructure to meet the demand. Here, travelers will find a variety of airlines connecting Cancun to important global destinations.
