Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen is a beautiful beach in the Riviera Maya (160 km corridor from Cancun to Tulum), situated in the eastern part of the Yucatan Peninsula. Playa (easy call to Playa del Carmen) its only 68 km from Cancun via highway 307 and is one of the many natural wonders the State of Quintana Roo has to offer in Mexico.

Playa del Carmen is only 45 minutes from Cancun’s international airport, where you can take a cab, a private shuttle to Playa del Carmen or a bus to Playa. There is also a small airport in Playa that has service mainly to Cozumel and some ruins, such as Chichen Itza and Palenque.

There’s also an international airport in Cozumel island, from which it’s easy to get to Playa del Carmen; grab a taxi to the dock, el muelle, and catch the ferry to Playa that leaves every hour, except at 11 am and 1 pm.

Playa del Carmen is a little Caribbean beach town has grown tremendously in popularity during the last decade. There’s a good reason for that – Playa is a fantastic place to spend your vacation, hang out, or live. The town has grown along the beach, so wherever you go, you will feel the closeness to the ocean.

There are some popular beaches at Playa del Carmen like Coco Beach, where you will find a couple of restaurants and dive shops. Chunzubul reef just outside Coco Beach is a good place to snorkel. It also provides a protected natural port for Playa’s dive boats. North of Coco Beach, the beach gets emptier and emptier as you keep going north. Here’s a good place to be on your own.

South of the dock is an area called Playacar. This planned development is where all the big, all-inclusive resorts are located. You’ll also find the golf course, some private homes and condos, the aviary, and some interesting Mayan ruins.

In Playa del Carmen you can find , restaurants, bars, beach clubs, shops, grocery stores, car rental, as well as bus station, post office, police and most banks.

Playa del Carmen has a sub-tropical climate, which means it’s almost always warm. Or hot. The annual average temperature is about 27C or 80F. Temperature is not the only consideration when in a tropical climate. All year around the humidity level is very high, often around 90 per cent. Weather here is pretty reliable, but there can be exceptions, as always the case when it comes to weather. Regardless of what time of year you get here, you will have great beach days and the ocean is always warm enough to swim in.

Many visitors of Playa del Carmen fall in love with this exotic paradise. Most travelers from around the world go for short term stays to bask in the sun. A growing trend is that vacationers that have been coming to this beach front heaven for years.

Playa del Carmen attracts people from the States, Europe and South America, all with different beach cultures. So, whatever your preference, you’ll be comfortable on the playa of Playa. There are topless women here and there, but not everywhere. Basically you can say that the further north from the ferry dock you get, the less clothing you’ll see. But you don’t have to take anything off unless you want to. Whatever way you go, do it with respect. On Saturdays and Sundays there are more Mexicans on the beach, which calls for more coverage. As you leave the beach and get on to 5th Avenue, it’s advisable to cover up somewhat. You are, after all, visitors in a different culture.
